WRITING TIP: Don’t use the same word, or the same set of words, over and over again in your writing. Using a variety of words – that is, using synonyms – can make your writing stronger and more interesting to your readers.

EXAMPLE

ORIGINAL: Last week I bought a dog. My dog enjoys sleeping on the sofa.

BETTER: Last week I bought a dog. My new pet enjoys sleeping on the sofa.

EXAMPLE

ORIGINAL: Many people do not like their job, and they wish they could get a new job.

BETTER: Many people do not like their work, and they wish they could get a new job.

EXAMPLE

ORIGINAL: Education can open up everybody’s eyes to new ideas. The government should strive to provide education for everybody.

BETTER: Learning can open up people’s eyes to new ideas. The government should strive to provide education for everybody.
